Working with PDF files for Distance Learning

Many of us now find ourselves in the position of figuring out how to be distance-learning instructors with little to no training, preparation, or materials! This is the challenge of a lifetime!

The first thing I’d like to mention is that it is still important to respect the copyright of the educational companies who provide your curriculum materials. If they do not allow materials to be posted online, you really need to find other materials. Companies have the right to protect their copyright, even during a pandemic, because after the pandemic is over, no one is going to buy products that are all over the internet for free. And then, those companies you depend on will no longer be in business and then we are all out of luck! So, please, respect copyright!

Resources sold in my Teachers Pay Teachers store, Placido Language Resources are fully reproducible, and you MAY share them online with YOUR OWN students in a password-protected learning management system such as Google Classroom.

What you cannot do:

  • Place them in a Google Folder that is accessible to anyone other than your students.
  • Share them with other teachers.
  • Upload them to an open website.
  • In any way make them available for use or viewing by anyone other than your own students.

Placido Language Resources offers most resources in PDF form, and they are sometimes sold as a single document. This makes it convenient for teachers to browse the pages they need, print, and copy. However, now that we are in a new reality of distance learning, the single-document format might not be as convenient for teachers who wish to share documents with students.

I personally use Adobe Acrobat software for working with PDF documents, but you do not need expensive software to separate your PDF documents into individual pages! I recommend using a FREE site called https://www.ilovepdf.com/. This site allows you to upload a PDF document, split it into individual pages, and re-download it as a zip file to save on your computer. From there, you can upload individual pages to your LMS to use with your students. Screen Shot 2020-04-05 at 11.28.48 AM

Is your school not providing you with funding during this time of school closure? I have a variety of FREE Spanish materials. Some of them may need to be adapted for distance-learning, but you are welcome to use and adapt them. I just ask that you not re-distribute them to others, but rather refer others to my TPT store.

If you are looking for longer-term solutions to your curriculum needs, Teachers Pay Teachers is facilitating a sale of up to 25% off participating stores. Placido Language Resources is fully participating in the sale, and I hope this makes it easier for you to obtain the resources you need. I’d also encourage you to ask your school to look into “TPT for Schools.” This program is a really affordable way to gain access to MANY MANY resources, and takes the burden off the shoulders of individual teachers to finance their own curriculum. Check it out, it doesn’t hurt to ASK!
