What is circumlocution?
Circumlocution means “talking around” a word. If you do not know a word, you do not stop… you describe it! You use what you do know to explain what you mean. This keeps the conversation going and often helps your conversation partner guess or give you the word.

I’m still not sure, can you give me an example?
Of course! Let’s say you need to ask someone if you can heat up your lunch, but you do not know the word for microwave. You might say “it is a box that makes food hot.” Maybe you are trying to explain that you collect penguins but you don’t know the word penguin. You might say “a bird that is black and white and likes cold water.”
